12 May – 3 July, Exchange: Year 3 Architecture Design Studio Findings

POSTER

EXCHANGE

Architecture is the point of exchange, between structure and program, infrastructure and everyday life.

The pedagogy of Year 3 in Hong Kong University focuses on investigating architecture from the perspective of the city: to understand architecture in relation to urban dynamics. This program continues its research into the contemporary Asian city referring Hong Kong and Shanghai as laboratories for urban research and design. To use structure, site and program as a driving force for this exchange, three sites in Hong Kong and three sites in Shanghai are selected to exhibit different characteristics of urban context. Locating along the periphery of a traditional worker’s village, Feng Cheng New Village(凤城新村), the three sites in Shanghai offer unique opportunities to develop architectural propositions that deeply rooted in the urban condition.

This semester consists of three different yet intimately connected parts. The first focuses on the car parking structure. The design process is supported by an analytical phases in which different precedents of car parking structures are investigated by students. The second phase is concerned with the built environment of the selected site, to survey this indigenous condition yet the window onto it is architecture. From it, students gaze on vistas that seldom catch architects’ eye, in sociology and demographics in particular. Series of analytical drawings are produced to articulate the site. The third part of the seeding exercise consists of the defined program that contribute to the community, evolved structure that accommodate the car parking and daily activities, finally culminates in a 3000㎡ community complex.

The scope of the program is to raise, through the exchange of structure, site and program, the awareness of the architecture project as the concrete site of the critical articulation of complex sets of latent contents embedded in those spatial constructs. They together constitute the physical landscape, within which our every lives take place.
