14 April: ‘Cities within a City’

4 Collectivism - Lam

Monday 14 April, we have researcher Tat Lam speaking about the collective related to the development of Shenzhen, in his lecture ‘Cities within a City: From Urban Voids, to Collective Urban Memories to Collective Spaces’.

Tat Lam’s lecture will critically revisit some selected design and research projects of Urbanus in the last 15 years, in order to unfold some unique phenomena in the rapid urbanization process of Shenzhen. The concept of ‘the collective’ transformed in the different urbanization stages of Shenzhen, from a city of production to a city of consumption. The lecture discusses how the specific practice model seeks for opportunities to insert, sustain and enlarge collective spaces, memories and architectural typologies in these different stages of Shenzhen.

Dr. Tat Lam is the director of Urbanus Research Bureau (URB) at Urbanus. He is leading projects of independent urban studies and urban design in the office. Dr. Tat Lam gained his PhD degree from the Bartlett School of Architecture, focusing on developing ethnographic methodology to understand architectural and urban development in contemporary China.
