Applications are invited for appointments as Part-time Assistant Professor/Lecturer in the Department of Architecture (several posts) (Ref.: 497082), to commence in Spring 2020 for one semester/academic year, on an hourly-paid basis, with the possibility of renewal upon meeting performance criteria.
The Department of Architecture has an international reputation and is ranked amongst the world’s best architectural schools. Design thinking is at the core of its values and the Department prides itself on questioning the status quo in an active and dynamic research environment. The young and bright team of scholars and professionals who constitute the teaching staff of the Department and its Division of Landscape represent a diversity of research interests. The scale and breadth of case studies in the region offers a potential portfolio of exciting research projects and a laboratory structure offers opportunities to pull efforts, cross disciplinary boundaries and develop forums for exchange. The Department offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in an intense and demanding environment where staff members take an active part in shaping the Department’s culture through both teaching and administrative responsibilities. Applicants must possess a professional degree in Architecture. An advanced degree in Architecture or an additional experience in related fields is recommended. The ideal candidates would be multilingual and can conduct academic affairs including teaching, learning, and service in multiple languages to strengthen the Department and the University’s international ties with other leading institutions within Asia and beyond. A verified track record of such international collaboration and the external recognition of overall teaching excellence would be highly advantageous. In addition, they should provide a clear evidence of teaching record and/or professional experience, which demonstrates their continuous refinement in teaching capacity from its planning to implementation, and evaluation. They should have architecture experience in Mainland China and also maintain a highly critical form of practice that exhibits a contribution to the discipline of architecture as an engaging platform of debate and dialogue within the increasingly complex society we live. Specific knowledge of architecture and/or urbanism of Shanghai is an advantage. Appointees will travel to the Yangtze River Delta Region for field trips for extended periods of time. A valid permit to work in China is required.
The appointees should be able to conduct teaching at undergraduate level of the following courses: design studios, core courses on visual culture, communication, building/material technology, history/theory and advanced seminars.
A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered.
